JJJ Hottest 100 Aussie Albums

Ok... disclaimer: There are far more Aussie albums I've not heard than ones I have so of course my votes aren't necessarily for the 'best' albums but simply for my favourites of the ones I have heard. So, having said that, the ten albums I voted for are (in no particular order):

Goanna - Spirit of Place
Jebediah - Slightly Odway
Midnight Oil - Head Injuries
My Friend The Chocolate Cake - Brood
Paul Kelly and The Coloured Girls - Gossip
Regurgitator - Unit
Sleepy Jackson, The - Lovers
Triffids, The - Born Sandy Devotional
Weddings Parties Anything - Roaring Days
Things of Stone and Wood - The Yearning

It was a very hard task to narrow the many Aussie albums I love down to a final ten. But there they are. Some of the final ones that just missed the cut were INXS - The Swing, The Spazzy's - Aloha! Go Bananas, silverchair - Frogstomp, Tim Rogers & The Twin Set - What Rhymes With Cars and Girls, and You Am I - Hourly Daily.

JJJ hottest 100 of all time

it's been a while since JJJ did their last hottest 100 of all time. from memory i think we could only vote for one song at that time. my vote went to 'smells like teen spirit' and it came in at number one. needless to say i was a happy camper. it's come time again to vote for our favourite songs and this time we're able to vote for ten songs whilst nominating one of them as the best. obviously narrowing all of the songs ever written down to the ten best is impossible: i find it hard enough choosing a top ten for each year. still, i've done my best and i've no doubt there will be plenty of people who'll disagree with me:

The Church - Almost With You
Depeche Mode - Blasphemous Rumours
The Hummingbirds - Blush
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen
Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs' Tears
Showbag - Perish Union

i had to nominate one of the songs as my favourite so that went to 'smells like teen spirit'. i should also note that it was very hard cutting 'that joke isn't funny anymore' by the smiths out of the final ten so that was a very unlucky number eleven. we'll soon see how few of my choices make the final cut.

2008 JJJ hottest 100

and here we are again.. voting for our favourite songs of the past year. i lodged my votes yesterday and will find out in a few weeks how many make the final list. i managed to listen to a lot of JJJ in the early part of the year but unfortunately as the year went on the work radio ended up being tuned into other stations. for this reason a large number of my songs were on high rotation earlier in the year. despite my limited exposure, i still found it very hard to cull my shortlist to 10 songs. the ones i finally voted for are:

Anti-Flag - Bright Lights Of America
Cloud Control - Vintage Books
Cut Copy - Lights and Music
Gyroscope - 1981
Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor
MGMT - Time To Pretend
N.E.R.D. - Everyone Nose
Stars - Take Me To The Riot
VHS or Beta - Can't Believe A Single Word
Yael Naim - New Soul

looking back at the final 10 demonstrates my rather strong penchant for pop music. we'll soon find out whether JJJ listeners share that taste.

EDIT: the results are in and i dropped back this year with only four of the songs i voted for making the top 100. they were: Lights and Music (#15), Time To Pretend (#18), Ready For The Floor (#69) and 1981 (#85).

2007 JJJ hottest 100

and again we get to that time of year when we vote for our favourite songs from the previous year. in the past two years my choices haven't done particularly well with 5 of my 10 last year and 4 the year before making the top 100. up until now i've been able to blame it on living overseas and having limited exposure to aussie music. well, i've been home for a few months now but my exposure to our aussie product this year still isn't great. nevertheless, below are the 10 songs i've voted for this year:

Arcade Fire - Intervention
Faker - This Heart Attack
Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
Howling Bells - Cities Burning Down
Kings Of Leon - On Call
The Panics - Don't Fight It
Silverchair - Straight Lines
Sparkadia - Animals
VHS Or Beta - Can't Believe A Single Word
Whitley - I Remember

i'll be interested to see how they go.

EDIT: equalling my effort last year, 5 of the songs i voted for made the hottest 100. they were 'straight lines' (#2), 'on call' (#3), 'this heart attack' (#5), 'don't fight it' (#10), and 'chelsea dagger' (#59). i just had a look back at my votes for the 2006 hottest 100 and noticed that i voted for 'chelsea dagger' last year as well so i don't know how that slipped into the eligible song list for 2007. it didn't make the hottest 100 last year so it was second time lucky

2006 JJJ hottest 100

well it's that time of year again when we get to vote for the hottest 100 songs of the past 12 months. my exposure to a lot of the list is quite limited given that i've not been in australia. nevertheless, it was still hard culling the list down to the below 10 songs that i ended up voting for:

Bob Evans - Don't You Think It's Time
Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Hard-Fi - Cash Machine
Killers - When You Were Young
Lily Allen - Smile
Saboteurs - Hands
Saboteurs - Steady As She Goes
Smoosh - Find A Way
Sodastream - Twin Lakes

last year only four of the songs i voted for actually made the top 100 so i'll be interested to see what happens this year. if anyone wants to post the 10 songs they've voted for in my comments i'd be interested to have a look

EDIT: well, my votes did better this year with 5 of the songs i voted for making the cut. they were: 'when you were young' (#4); 'crazy' (#6); 'smile' (#15); 'steady as she goes' (#28); 'don't you think it's time' (#37)
